Laser Periodontal Therapy

It has been six years since Dr. Pohlhaus entered the exciting world of laser dentistry. He has been able to apply this technology to just about every aspect of dental care, resulting in a more comfortable dental experience. Dr. Pohlhaus has pursued much training in periodontal applications of lasers and is very excited at some of the new techniques that have been developed. Last summer he had the great privilege to attend training at the cutting edge Montana Center for Laser Dentistry where he was in the first group ever to be trained in a laser periodontal technique known as W.P.T. (Wavelength Optimized Periodontal Treatment).

Our latest laser, the Powerlase AT by Lares Research has been an excellent addition to the practice. It actually has two distinct lasers known as Nd:YAG and Er:YAG. The W.P.T. protocol combines the best of what these two types of lasers can do when treating gum disease.

The huge advantage for the patient is that this minimally invasive periodontal treatment is achieved with out scalpel or sutures, This "blade and stitch free" results in a much more comfortable experience. Traditional periodontal surgery typically involves a week or so of significant pain, yet with W.P.T. patients post operative course is remarkably comfortable. In addition this approach is less expensive than traditional surgeries as it can often be done in fewer appointments.

We combine this therapy with a customized antibiotic regimen determined by a DNA test to identify the patient's particular bacteria (OralDNA Labs) and a computerized bit analysis (T-scan III..see below).

If  someone you care about has been avoiding periodontal surgery due to the pain and expense involved let them know about this breakthrough.

T-Scan III computerized bite analysis

T-Scan III graphical representation of occlusal forces

T-Scan III is a computerized bite analyzer. Having an eve and harmonious bite ("occlusion") is important for many reasons. This unique device allows Dr. Pohlhaus to see exactly how hard the bite is on each tooth and even parts of each tooth. Applications of this technology are many including TMJ treatment, periodontal disease, implants, crowns, bridges, partial dentures, and tooth pain. With the

T-Scan III Dr. Pohlhaus can accurately evaluate your bite and make needed adjustments in a conservative manner.

Bottled water may raise your decay risk

Bottled waster has become increasingly popular. Unfortunately, most bottled waters do not contain the fluoride found in municipal water. Many dentists have noticed an increase in adult cavities in patients who drink bottled water exclusively. The fluoride in tap water helps keep the enamel surface strong and decay resistant. Bottled water is expensive and the bottles can present a disposal problem. We recommend patients drink tap water instead. Fridge, Brita, and PUR filters are okay, they leave most of the fluoride in the water. If you must drink bottled water we recommend you supplement this by using a daily fluoride rinse like ACT or Listerine Total Care.
